Lenggong is situated in the Lenggong Valley, sandwiched between the Bintang and Titiwangsa Ranges. It is a rural area, with small kampongs surrounded by green vegetation and limestone hills with numerous caves. The Lenggong Valley is one of Peninsular Malaysia’s most important areas for archaeology, as excavations have revealed many traces of Malaysia’s prehistory, with finds such as cave drawings, jewellery, pottery, weapons and stone tools. It is the site of one of the oldest known place of human activity in the Peninsula. The Lenggong Valley was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site on 30 June 2012

Bukit Bunuh

Key site for the Paleolithic findings

Discovered in 2007, the 8 km-diameter Bukit Bunuh meteoric-impacted crater is Southeast Asia’s oldest Paleolithic site, dating over 1.83 million years. Embedded in suevite soil post-impact is the region’s oldest stone tool, a quartzite hand axe. Despite deceptive palm trees, the site holds captivating historical significance.

The Paleolithic tool-making site, pivotal for the region’s culture 74,000 years ago, underwent excavations in 1938 by Benjamin Collins and in 1954 by Gale Sieveking. Chronometric dates and artifact verification were established by Universiti Sains Malaysia in 1987.
